Roots Tech
Here is a summary of things I learned from yesterday (from Kent Roylance)
Online virtual vs In Person classes - No doubt about it, it is a much better experience attending classes in person. Some are not attending the conferrence to avoid the crowds, and maybe it is just me, but the crowds really aren't that bad. Attending in person, I have a much bigger selection of classses I can attend, and I am not dealing with technical issues of trying to watch the classes virtually. Karalee had several complaints about the technical issues of watching classes online, and so that can be really frustrating to deal with. All of these virtual classes will be available later to watch, but in most cases, people are not going to go back and watch these classes, so if you are going to watch these classes, it is best to do it now.
Purpose of classes - One thing I noticed yesterday, is that several of the classes were for people who were for professional genealogists, or for people who wanted to be professional genealogists, and it seemed at times they were trying to convert you to researching like a professional genealogist. I really felt sorry for those that are beginners, where much of what was shared probably went over their head. For beginners that don't want to be a professional genealogist, please be careful about what classes you take. If you are in a class that seems to be geared toward the professional genealogist, then go find another class. I am going to be much pickier today about the classes I attend.
Purpose of conference - Except for Discovery Day, it is very obvious to me that for Thursday and Friday, there really isn't much discussion, if any at all, regarding the type of research helpful for members of the church, and so that is why being connected and united is a great theme for everyone inside and outside of the church. Going to conference can really be a great missionary opportunity where you are rubbing shoulders with people outside of the church who are interested in family history. I had a missionary experience yesterday, and I probably should have done more to try and introduce the church. For those that are attending conference, I would highly recommend reaching out and getting to know those who sit around you, because more than likely, you will be sitting next to someone that is not a member and their heart is turning to their fathers and mothers.
Pictures - Even though I was really tired around 4-5pm from everything I had learned, the best class by far was a class about an incredible product called myLio; which, I think is the most incredible photo managing product I have ever seen (and I have used some good ones), that I think is revolutionary. Attending conference is many times where you will attend many classes and there is usually that one that makes it worth it all, and my last class yesterday was it. I am big time into pictures and videos and have had a terrible time trying to come up with the best system of mananging my pictures. If your anything like me, my pictures are everywhere, duplicated on sever devices, and just not easy to find what I need. I have made several attempts to organize them and make them easier to use, but just nowhere where I want to be. In my opinion, myLio is exactly what I have been looking for, and I will be creating videos about what I have learned about myLio and how to best use it. myLio is going to be spot-lighted today, and for good reason, and I will be looking for any class about myLio to learn more about it. Here is the link to the product https://mylio.com/. You can watch the same class that I watched from this link - https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/collect-organize-protect-building-your-familys-digital-legacy. If you do watch it, please let me know what you think.
Have a great day watching classes at roots tech today.
